This book leaves an aftertaste。 I finished it a few days ago and still cannot shake the last third off completely。 On one hand it just turns the table and stereotypes between genders, on the other hand when this reversal is done in full context, it becomes clear that the real reason is "power" and not just in the electrical sense。 This book leaves an aftertaste。 I finished it a few days ago and still cannot shake the last third off completely。 On one hand it just turns the table and stereotypes between genders, on the other hand when this reversal is done in full context, it becomes clear that the real reason is "power" and not just in the electrical sense。 。。。more

I really wanted to like this book。 This book has such a good concept, but the delivery felt a little underwhelming if I am honest。 It is written in like a YA novel, it is an easy read, but is dotted with little bits of 'evidence' and artifacts, which make it a litttttttttle bit cringey。 The themes are very adult, which makes the style and surface level feminism not well targeted? However, I do think that this will translate for the TV programme。 I really wanted to like this book。 This book has such a good concept, but the delivery felt a little underwhelming if I am honest。 It is written in like a YA novel, it is an easy read, but is dotted with little bits of 'evidence' and artifacts, which make it a litttttttttle bit cringey。 The themes are very adult, which makes the style and surface level feminism not well targeted? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book was mixed for me - great first half slightly disappointing second half。 The idea was really good and interesting and novel and the first half was great but it did get really violent in the second half 😆 also that every single woman pretty much loses all morals seems a bit far fetched。 But I think the point was that anyone in power becomes corrupted and it definitely showed that。 Good book and definitely not one that will be forgotten!

Hmm。 I feel this book is particularly difficult to review。 The concept is so good but the execution is questionable。 First of all, the premise is so fascinating。 I love the idea and I think that this alone had huge potential。However, I found the way the story (?) was told was fairly clumsy and confusing。 The book switches between characters at each new chapter and I found myself flicking back to remember who’s point of view I was looking through now。 I didn’t really feel a connection with any of Hmm。 I feel this book is particularly difficult to review。 The concept is so good but the execution is questionable。 First of all, the premise is so fascinating。 I love the idea and I think that this alone had huge potential。However, I found the way the story (?) was told was fairly clumsy and confusing。 The book switches between characters at each new chapter and I found myself flicking back to remember who’s point of view I was looking through now。 I didn’t really feel a connection with any of the characters to be honest。I question the story because nothing was really delivered。 I know people will say, there’s a hidden meaning in this, a deeper realisation。 Sure, I see that - but I still want a beginning-middle-end。 It was very flat with next to no achievements/losses for the characters。 There are some (trigger warning) quite graphic rape scenes。 I almost closed the book for good at one of these particular scenes and felt they weren’t handled as they could have been。 Also the way the ‘Western World’ reacted to the new found powers compared to the rest of the world didn’t feel right to me (particularly as America seemed to have the most calm reaction!)。 I just thought it wasn’t executed quite how I wanted it to be。 I had heard such good things about this book and like I said, the whole premise is so interesting。 But ‘Power’ was clearly not for me。 。。。more

Dark。 Would not have read if not for book club, but must admit it left my fingertips tingling。 Women respond to newfound power with aggression/violence。 Tackles gender oppression issues。

*4。5 What a book! I had pretty high expectations and almost all of them were met。 The world building was really good, I enjoyed it that it hit so close to home, made it feel very realistic。 And more scary。

Anca Iftode

Love a good dystopia, especially one as thought provoking as this one!I don’t believe the book is a literary masterpiece, but it DOES get you to think, thoroughly about the gender power balance and how it could easily also go the other way, if women had the power and the victim became the aggressor。

really promising concept but found it did not hold up in execution, did not enjoy plot development。 points for engaging writing style tho

3。5 It was good。 I like the irony and the concept how the opressers become the oppressed。 Men afraid of women。 How the tables have turned。 The ending just fell too short and there was no climax to the story, it just ended。。。?

DNF @ 57%Tried finishing this for the Late Night Book Club this month, and I just can't。 I'm actively avoiding picking it up, and that's no way to live a life。 I don't care about any of the characters, it feels very YA, but not in a good way, and many of the actions taken in the book as far as I'd reached were depraved seemingly for the sole purpose of shock value, which made it that much more difficult to read。 DNF @ 57%Tried finishing this for the Late Night Book Club this month, and I just can't。 I'm actively avoiding picking it up, and that's no way to live a life。 I don't care about any of the characters, it feels very YA, but not in a good way, and many of the actions taken in the book as far as I'd reached were depraved seemingly for the sole purpose of shock value, which made it that much more difficult to read。 。。。more

Thought provoking Far exceeded my expectations, lots of interesting ideas here, wrapped in a great storyline。 I think I’m going to have to read a few more of Naomi’s books!

Despite the compelling premise, this book wasn't as subversive nor empowering as I'd thought it would it。 It was more upsetting than anything。 Rape, religious fanaticism, violence, terrorism。 It's all the same as what we have in reality。 And while I gather that's the point: to underline the real world horrors through a fictional flip of the script, it doesn't challenge anything。 What's the takeaway supposed to be? That people with power, regardless of gender, will abuse it in the most horrible ways? Isn't that fucking cheery? And even with the reversal (giving women the power), women are not spared from violence in this novel。 In fact, one of the most difficult chapters for me to read was all about a woman being cruelly, inexplicably violated by people she thought she could trust (I almost want to call it rape, though it was not sexual)。 Again, how does that challenge anything? It just reads as more of the same violence against women that I'm so tired of coping with。 I also find no joy in reading about innocent men being tortured, raped, and murdered either。 I feel like this book won't reach the audience it arguably could impact。 I。e。 I think mostly women will read this book and just be reminded of all the ways in which women are mistreated, mutilated, and abused in real life and how much violence is wrought upon us and the world at large by people who have or want power。 I don't need that reminder。 And the folks who might find a book like this eye-opening。。。probably won't read it。 Plot wise, I also didn't know where it was going or what it was building to。 Sectional breaks indicated 5 years to go, 4 years to go, etc。 but I had no idea what we were counting down to。 The way the book is framed - as a manuscript being exchanged by two authors - didn't initially seem relevant, but was given more meaning in the end。 On the whole, I was torn on whether to give this 1 or 2 stars。 I appreciate the thought and effort that went into this novel。 I think I understand the points the author was trying to make。 But。。。I did not enjoy reading it。 As I said above, I don't need a novel to remind me how awful the world can be and how unjustly, horribly women are treated。 The people who don't already understand that to be our reality。。。will not be reading this book。 。。。more

I didn’t appreciate the many storylines and directions it took。 I felt like it was going in too many directions and didn’t work well as a cohesive piece。 I did enjoy the entire idea and the thought process of would woman be “more caring” than men if they held all the power? It just reassures me that gender roles are shit。

Zoë Read

The gender swap is hilariously obvious at times, sometimes too on-the-nose。 But overall a very enjoyable book。

Mari Smith

Some of it was good but I really never cared for it。 Also for a book that’s supposed to be feminist, it has some very questionable treatment of women as a whole that I didn’t agree with。 I personally think it’s not worth reading。

2。5Took me longer than I wanted to finish this book。 I really wanted to like this book。 The premise sounded interesting girls/women with powers! Being able to use electricity to your advantage。 It was a pretty slow start and I was going to give up on it but I had heard so many great things about it。 I pushed through and it started picking up around page 200 which isn’t great。 Didn’t really care for the characters and the development。 Had to skim through the last couple of pages just to finish it 2。5Took me longer than I wanted to finish this book。 I really wanted to like this book。 The premise sounded interesting girls/women with powers! I'd call this a high 3。 I did enjoy it but once I put it down I had trouble wanting to pick it up again。 Very accurately compared to Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale。 。 。 Just opposite。 I'd call this a high 3。 I did enjoy it but once I put it down I had trouble wanting to pick it up again。 Very accurately compared to Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale。 。 。 Just opposite。 。。。more

:(( this book really disappointed me。 I thought the premise and the idea was fantastic, and I really had high hopes for it。 However I personally found the book itself just so incredibly hard to follow。 I found the number of characters and the constant back and forth between different places quite confusing。 I absolutely loved the force that the women have, and after recent events I thought that was very poignant, I just couldn’t get myself focussed on the actually story unfortunately :((

I liked this book。 I wasn’t really draw to any of the characters but its well written and thought provoking。 It’s empowering and thrilling。 What if women were given the power to stand up to men? What if the roles were reversed? I read this as part of The Late Night Book Club and I cannot wait to hear what everyone else’s thoughts were。

I have conflicted feelings about this book。 Even though I found it very unique and thought provoking, there were times that the story felt like it dragged。 I'm also left with many unanswered questions。 And I didn't find the ending very satisfying。 That said, I do think it's a very important story that talks about gender and everything that comes with it。 I also found myself wanting to know what would happen next。 I don't think women would act this way, though, and I honestly didn't like reading I have conflicted feelings about this book。 Even though I found it very unique and thought provoking, there were times that the story felt like it dragged。 I'm also left with many unanswered questions。 And I didn't find the ending very satisfying。 That said, I do think it's a very important story that talks about gender and everything that comes with it。 I also found myself wanting to know what would happen next。 I don't think women would act this way, though, and I honestly didn't like reading about a world where women are the villains, but it was an interesting concept nonetheless。 I guess the word I'd use to describe this book is strange。 。。。more

So this was The Late Night Book Club pick for March and that's why I read it。 I seriously considered DNFing this book almost half way through because I just wasn't interested in it。 I thought the premise was really interesting and it did play out in an interesting way。 The writing just didn't captivate me and I just didn't feel very connected to the story。 I didn't feel like the book had a well done plot or the writing was enthralling enough for me to keep on reading。 If it wasn't for the book c So this was The Late Night Book Club pick for March and that's why I read it。 I seriously considered DNFing this book almost half way through because I just wasn't interested in it。 I thought the premise was really interesting and it did play out in an interesting way。 The writing just didn't captivate me and I just didn't feel very connected to the story。 I didn't feel like the book had a well done plot or the writing was enthralling enough for me to keep on reading。 If it wasn't for the book club and switching to the e-book I would not have finished this book。 This book felt like 1984, but with a more interesting concept。 It had a good idea, but the execution was not for me。 I do think that this book explores a lot of interesting concepts and I did enjoy those aspects of the book。 The first half of the book is hard to get through though。 It tackled a few different things, but I think if the armageddon stuff was brought into the novel earlier then I would have had a better experience with the book。 But I did figure out that this book was set in a situation where it was more of a history textbook, but with a novel structure。 Maybe this is a story that should have been set in first person because third person took away from the characters。 I also had issues with the characters because they just felt so two dimensional to me。 I just couldn't resonate with them。 I liked seeing their physical journeys, they just didn't come out of the page for me。 Maybe I'm missing something in terms of character growth, but I just didn't see it。 Overall, I would still encourage people to read this book as I do think it's an important read。 Like 1984, it's important, it's just not enjoyable and hard to get through。 。。。more
